On Tuesday, November 10, 2015, Professor Roach gave a presentation that discussed how to build a network. He also spoke on the topic of how to be professional and attentive. Professor Roach worked for 35 years for an accounting firm, as well as several financial firms before finding his home in College Station. Professor Roach has gained much experience through his past work opportunities, but it was his networking that helped land him a teaching position at Texas A&M University. Professor Roach offered several tips that I feel will help me stand out in a meet and greet situation. He made it clear that you never know whom you will meet and what type of deals could be made in these scenarios. As I start attending more of these events, I will definitely need to work on taking charge of conversations, finding connections with the individual, as well as how to sell my story and who I am. However, it is important to stay professional, be enthusiastic, and ask good questions. Paraphrasing and building off of the conversation you had is an important step in creating that solid relationship with the individual you are speaking with. This is something that does not come easy to me and that I will definitely need to work on in the near future. Professor Roach had us get to know the people around us and this was definitely an uncomfortable task for me. However, I learned a lot about the people that were sitting with me and feel like I was able to connect well with everyone. By practicing this, I feel like I will be able to learn to better express myself in a more unique way. By trying to go out of my way to meet people, I will be able to build my network as well as practice these skills that are key elements in connecting with employers and people at professional
