Professor Beach Argument Analysis

This semester I have learned a great deal from Professor Beach, especially in regards to argumentative essays. He has taught how to get the proper evidence, facts, and to stay on point and remain focused. But most importantly he has taught me that argumentative essays must have a valid argument. Before I took Professor Beach’s course, when I saw commercials, advertisements, or the news, I would believe them without doing the proper research. Beach has taught me to see whether or not people are actually telling the truth or using fallacies. This has changed my entire perspective on not only what I hear but what we see in everyday life.

In my second essay “Norma McCorvey” (“Outline”), I had a hard time on getting ideas together and expressing my thoughts. I felt the task organized as a group also made it harder, but once I become confident in myself I find it easier to put all the facts together so that they make sense. The results from my second essay (“Norma McCorvery…” 6) , showed I did not provide enough evidence. I feel another weakness I have is staying on topic. At times I add too many details and will become captivated on new information so much that I stray from my main topic and start to become irrelevant. I figured this out in my first summary, “News and Truth Are Not the Same Thing” (Summary), I summarized a little bit too much instead of getting the main points of the summary. I can also say that another problem I had was understanding upper level writing. In some of the readings, such as the “Hidden Persuaders” (Summary) , I had to read the article about seven times to properly understand it. But as I read it each time I better understood it and my critical thinking skills began to kick in to

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Overall, throughout this year in 2017 of 9th grade English I’ve undeniably enhanced my personal writing. Some of the reasons I’ve achieved this specific goal are consistently working on Achieve3000, meeting at my expectations for typing essays and reports, and also gaining knowledge from commentary of my assignments in class. At first, the articles I complete in Achieve3000 has thoroughly created my vocabulary and had developed my understanding for each topic of that article. Secondly, I’ve learned that my expectations for a solid essay were required to first obtain a fine thesis statement, secondly a claim that’s comparative, thirdly citing evidence that supports my claim, fourthly explain the evidence and lastly have a great conclusion.…

He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
