Professionalization and professionalism are two very similar words but both have different meanings. Professionalism is considered more of an image because one demonstrates skill, good judgment, and a polite behaviour geared towards specific professions. Professionalization on the other hand is defined as the social process by which any trade or occupation transforms itself into a true profession. Without professionalization, standards would not be set for an individual to act professionally. Both professionalization and professionalism are key components to nursing. Every client has the right to a voice and privacy. “Professional standards promote the highest level of quality nursing care for individuals and groups in institutional and community-based settings,” (Potter & Perry, pg. 153, 2010). As a RPN student, I have demonstrated some of the qualities of nursing in a professional manner. When dealing with a client, I ensure complete privacy by pulling the door shut behind me as well as draw a curtain in case a staff member or other resident were to wonder in. I also allow my resident to have a voice and if they do not want to do a particular task, I do not force them. This organization established qualifications to conduct the members of the profession. Depending on the title of nurse, specific schooling must take place to earn this title. For example, in order for myself to become a registered practical nurse, I will need to complete two years of schooling to earn a diploma as well as write and pass the Canadian Practical Nursing Registration Exam (CPNRE).
