Professionalism
The Bureau of Prisons has a Code of Conduct for its employees. The Code of Conduct identifies behavior that is not prohibited as a federal employee. Personally, I believe it is an agency that struggles with professionalism. My supervisor also stated this as a problem area for the agency. Examples include lack of professional language and dress. One act prohibited by the agency is using profanity toward the inmates. Officers regularly curse at the inmates and scream at them. This directly affects those in treatment as it may alter their mood and overall motivation for treatment. He cited a strength of the agency is that it looks good on paper. He also emphasized the agency’s move toward reentry as a great strength. Alternatively, while the Burea has made a push for reentry the institution has not been able to meet the demands. The budget has not increased, but the demand for mental services and programming has increased, and Beaumont is unable to successfully meet those demands. Without any changes in funding, it appears that psych services are in for a long, tedious year.
