One opinion of professionalism is being a member of a chosen vocation founded upon specialized educational training. (Krinn, 2011). Professionalism relates to white-collared, highly educated, salary or hourly. The individual posses qualities of autonomy. Work may be thought provoking and challenging. The working field can either be public, private or academia (Krinn, 2011).
The importance of professionalism to leadership is relevant to the nursing profession. Professionalism can determine the outcome of a situation. Nurses are encouraged to step up in the healthcare environment as leaders. Being professional is a characteristic that is appropriate for a leader to possess. These skills can help nurses be confident and capable in their role as a nurse and a leader. Earlier years have shown that the role of nursing has been undefined. Nursing historically has been focused on acquiring knowledge and skills. Nurses are constantly being educated on evidenced based practices. Nursing roles have increased and they have taken on the roles of junior doctors (Voyer, 2013). Nurses are included in decision-making processes, which is beneficial in the overall outcome for patients. By them participating in these additional roles they are able to be increasingly free thinking and productive allowing greater patient concentrated services (Voyer, 2013). "Truly compassionate care is skilled, competent value based care that respects individual dignity. It 's delivery requires the highest levels of skills and professionalism" (Straughair, 2012). "Nurses and nursing staff treat everyone in their care with dignity and humanity-they understand their individual needs, show compassion and sensitivity, and provide care in a way that respects all people equally." (Straughair, 2012). In order for nurses to be compassionate they need support systems. The factors that affect a nurse of being compassionate as stated earlier are are burnout and stress. Support Groups and Educational Groups are strategies to promote compassion and prevent stress. The supportive groups can help nurses deal with emotional and psychological situations and obtain support and insight from colleagues. (Straughair, 2012). Emotions can be surprising but knowing how to manage, but knowing how to manage emotions can prevent stress and decrease tension for the day. This is vital to excelling in the nursing
