This class has taught me to use my professional values before my own because each individual has their own values that may contradict their clients. If a social worker contradicts their client’s values then the client may become offended, which could cause you to lose their business. Every social worker is supposed to have an unbiased opinion towards every situation acknowledged by their client. Social workers professional values sometimes differ from their personal values: justice for their clients, human companionship, and dignity to the client. According to the NASW (National Association of Social Workers) Code of Ethics, “Social workers mission statement is planted by the core values: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence.” Throughout our journey as a social worker we live by these values, and if an individual cannot agree with the mission statement then this may not be the job for them. In social work the professional values in the work place is the mission statement. I have learned that communication and unbiased opinions help with discussion making. Being mindful can help me pay attention to my thoughts and feelings in the present time instead of the past and future. In the future, I see myself educating my clients instead of having a biased opinion on their situation. The action plan to help me improve in my professional walk is improving my communication skills, gaining more knowledge about my profession, and enhancing the ability to perform specialized tasks.
