In today’s world, nursing is one of the most stable, “recession proof and well-paying career in the United States. It offers a wide range of options and endless avenues that a nurse can pursue. Regardless, of what nursing specialty one has chosen, it is not only the physical aspect of the patient that we heal but also includes the emotional, psychological, spiritual and even the patient’s support system such as their friends and families. This is what I think is unique about the nursing profession. One can be a staff nurse, a nurse manager, nurse educator, case manager, nurse practitioner etc. we all need to take care of the patient holistically and in order to carry this out, one must be caring, compassionate and have a deeper understanding on what is it to be a nurse. When we recite the nightingale pledge, we have dedicated ourselves to devoted service for human welfare and as a “Missioner of health”.
As a bedside nurse working in a hospital and Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), I am able to see the best and worst of both world. As much as I enjoy working in a hospital because I learn to sharpen my skills, think critically and potential for career advancement, I cannot leave the SNF where I work at (I have attempted several times and I keep on coming back). Most of the residents at SNF are not sick enough to stay in the hospital but not well enough to stay at home. Residing at SNFs, assisted living facilities are options for this individuals who either have no surviving family members or who have family members that are busy working and raising their own
