Communication is an essential part of any job. It doesn’t matter if you are working behind the counter at McDonald’s or taking care of a critically ill patient, you need a basic form of communication. However, to be a professional nurse, it is imperative that you become a respectful team player by means of effective communication. (Kupperschmidt, Kientz, Ward, & Reinholz, 2010) Change of shift can be an extremely busy and stressful part of the day for any healthcare provider. The information that needs to be translated to the oncoming shift can be arduous and time consuming. The NICU I worked in adopted the SBAR protocol as a way of helping the nurses collect data in one place so they could have a smoother transition at the end of their shift. The-Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation (SBAR) was introduced to improve interdisciplinary rounds and shift report as stated by Cornell (2012). It is a concise form that highlights the pertinent information of each patient and aids the nurse in the delivery of the past 12 hours.

As Kepak (2013) points out, we have all given or received a less than desirable report during our nursing career. Sometimes my report was too long or too short.
