This week in field I had the opportunity to sit in on a professional meeting. The meeting was geared towards fund raising and getting awareness out to the community about Southern Christian Services and the services that they offer. The meeting was made up of social workers and several different community business liasons. This was a very different atmosphere for me. I felt like I was outside of my element, because I have always associated and been involved with social work on a micro level. I have only dealt mostly with clients and their families on a one on one basis, so this was new to me. As I entered the big meeting room, I was immediately intimidated. I was intimidated because of the style of the room, which seems silly as I reflect back on it now. The room was huge and fancy, which is totally different from the small meeting rooms I am used to meeting in. Once the

In this assignment I will establish an understanding of Interprofessional Working. This will include key principles of the topic which affect such diverse groups of service users I may encounter. Whilst continually reflecting on own experiences, I will aim to identify any key areas for improvement which could improve my experience of collaborative working as a professional. Defined by Thomas et al (2009) Interprofessional working is a ‘process whereby members of different professions and/or agencies work together to provide integrated health and/or social care for the benefit of service users’.…

I feel like I am professionally ready for my senior year placement. I am looking forward to being able to spend much more time and actually see what a social worker does and interact with a social worker on a much different level than previous service learning’s. I believe that being able to interact with individuals at this last site will help me tremendously when it comes to interacting with clients and employees at my senior placement. This service learning helped me to acquire social skills, which will be extremely helpful when it comes to next year. I would like to build on my learning for the next academic year by understanding and reading more about interviewing, assessment, intervention, and evaluation of practice.…

Furthermore I don’t know what to expect in every meeting. We got to the room where the meeting was held we asked the leader if we could sit in the meeting. In the meeting there were like 30 people in the room including us. This group was largest than the other two meetings we went to. There was a speaker of the day, as he started the meeting everyone started praying the serenity prayer.…

I recently went to an AA meeting at the Lamb Center in Fairfax, Virginia. It is a small center and by approaching the center I could tell that the meeting would be held in a smaller circle than what my classmates told me from their experiences. Even though I am a very relaxed person, when it comes to meeting total strangers I had my reservation on what to expect. We were instructed to be sitting in the back and basically just observe; yet I could see that “hiding” in the back at this place was an impossible task. After I parked my car and approached the door and elderly gentlemen approached me and asked if I was here for the meeting.…

Reflections of an AA Meeting Attendance by a Non-Alcoholic Support Meeting Reflection I attended an online Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. There were twenty-six participants there, including myself; two of which were moderators. I had actually logged on early, as is my habit attending seminars, and observed the other participants chatting beforehand. I was surprised by the lack of seriousness surrounding this whole process.…

As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…

When the leader introduced himself, I was taken aback by the fact he was an alcoholic. I know I should not have been, it would be a little arbitrary for the leader to not have experienced what the members were not experienced, but it was just caught me off guard. Another thing that surprised me was how responsive the members were. I have seen movies and television shows where they portray AA meetings. They always show a person introducing themselves and stating they are an alcoholic and then the group would respond, but in my meeting, after someone would read or share, the group would always thank them by name.…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…

This semester my clinical group and I were in Medical Surgical and this course was broken up into two parts, Adult Health I and Adult Health II. The first part of this semester my clinical group was assigned to Anderson Hospital and the second part we were assigned to Alton Memorial. After finding out that there were only four groups that were switching clinical instructors and hospitals, our group did not want to switch. At that time, we thought it was unfair and a waist of time to be switching hospitals and relearning computer systems, plus having to go through orientation again.…

My son will be entering the ninth grade at Jenks High School in August 2015. The school had a parent meeting to review electives and what is needed to graduate high school. Growing up in Canada I was thankful for this meeting since I had no idea what to expect. During the meeting they stated that students in Oklahoma only require 23 credits to graduate. This seemed low to me because even 20 years ago, I needed 28 credits to graduate.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…
