Professional Learning Community Analysis

The ability to effectively communicate is important in any work field including education. Professional Learning Communities (PLC) are used as an effective form of communication among educators who meet collaboratively to continuously improve performance as well as student learning. The powerful collaboration that characterizes PLCs is a systematic process in which teachers work together to analyze and improve their classroom practice (DuFour). When done correctly, PLCs lead to steadfast growth in student learning resulting in overall school success (Provini). As an educator, our number one goal is the growth of our students. We do not want our students to just learn the content but to really obtain a conceptual understanding of it. As students gain this deeper understanding, they will be able to create, analyze, and construct reliable arguments demonstrating their comprehensive understanding of the content learned. Three important questions that every PLC should focus on are (1) What do we want each student to learn?, (2) How will we know when each student has learned it?, and (3) How will we respond when a student experiences difficulty in learning? (DuFour). In PLCs, educators must work collaboratively to brainstorm evidence-based instructional strategies that meet each standard in order to reach a higher level of learning with students.
