From Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing “Phonological Activation during Visual Word Recognition in Deaf and Hearing Children” will be looked at and compared to “Bilingual Deaf Students’ Phonological Awareness in ASL and Reading Skills in English” from Sign Language Studies. Both articles are looking at phonological abilities of deaf students. However, this is being done in two completely different ways. The hearing journal’s article wants to research the phonological activation in deaf children but they are using deaf children with some type of hearing device, but compared to previous tests the researchers decided to use word-picture recognition instead of being speech dominated environments. The deaf journal took deaf children and examined the phonological activity by using the same type of set up except by using computer images, but they focused purely on deaf children without a hearing
