Professional Identity (Core Competency)
Field opportunity provides the occasion to develop professional identity and master interpersonal skills that allow one to apply knowledge gained in the classroom setting with workplace expectations. In order to ensure my professional growth throughout this semester, I have identified goals to warrant development in competencies associated with professional identity. Advocating for client access to the services provided by the social work agency is a fundamental component in our practice. With the intention of meeting this requirement, I will meet with students who have been identified as needing behavioral intervention once per week in a small group session for thirty minutes. Students a part of this group have been acknowledged as having extreme difficulties in the classroom settings by meeting certain criteria that have qualified them for small group behavior intervention classes. This demeanor is a reflection of how seriously one takes his or her job. Actions speak louder than words. How one dresses, behaves, and communicates with superiors and subordinates demonstrates professionalism. In an educational setting, it is imperative to dress in a way that is approachable and non-distracting. Students are observers and it is our responsibility to present ourselves in an appropriate manner that models expectation for students and families. Just the same, I must commit to being punctual to all responsibilities including meetings, groups and to my identified schedule. Remaining organized and prepared through the semester will help me maintain this expectation. Prompt responses to emails and phone calls demonstrates that I am reliable and dependable. This is important in order to maintain a positive and efficient rapport with families, administrators, and community members who are reliant on the services of school social
