The Professional Enrichment (PE) activities gave the opportunity to enhance my education on the different health problems that can be seen any day at the hospital and demonstrated how the interdisciplinary team is handling some of the problems at Rapid City Regional Hospital (RCRH).
The first activity consisted of Regional Health put on the 19th Annual Cardiovascular Disease and Wellness Symposium at the Civic Center in Rapid City, South Dakota (SD). The case study consisted of J.J., a nurse, and a speaker who talked about statistics regarding the teen and alcohol. Items mentioned were the leading causes of death for ages 12-19, alcohol use in adolescents, cost of underage drinking in SD, what long term use of alcohol leads to, the effect alcohol has on the brain, and how to use SBIRT (screening, brief intervention, motivation interview, and referral to treatment). In case patient goes into septic shock, I had to know what the best treatment to use, to prevent the patient form going into multiorgan dysfunction. When a patient is showing signs of sepsis the nurse has the responsibility to act quickly, and this conference demonstrated all the important points I need to provide patient safety.
At the Kids fair, I educated the children on how to properly brush and floss teeth. While the child was brushing or flossing teeth, I educated them on how often they should brush their teeth and how long they should brush. I was amazed that a lot of the children knew how often and how long to brush their teeth. Education on proper teeth hygiene is an important role as a nurse. If someone has teeth issues, it will make it hard to get proper nutrition, especially if he or she has a hard time chewing due to a loose tooth or a sore mouth from a
