Review of Professional Competence Evaluation Tools from the Literature Evaluation of nursing students in the clinical setting is a complex undertaking. The literature identifies multiple pilot projects of evaluation tools. Commonly, faculty observation of student performance is a predominant strategy used by faculty in many nursing programs. In some professional programs, competencies are based on national standards as well as licensure and certification requirements of a governing body.
