Review of Professional Competence Evaluation Tools from the Literature Evaluation of nursing students in the clinical setting is a complex undertaking. The literature identifies multiple pilot projects of evaluation tools. Commonly, faculty observation of student performance is a predominant strategy used by faculty in many nursing programs. In some professional programs, competencies are based on national standards as well as licensure and certification requirements of a governing body. What is emerging from the literature is that there are no uniform assessment methods to assess nursing students, that evaluation of competency is needed, but it is not stated, in what way this evaluation should be accomplished. Table 4 provides an overview
