Professional Competency Analysis

Improved Essays
Professional competency is a requirement in nursing. As nurses we play a crucial role in the delivery of health care services. Being competent does not only mean being great at skills and having a large knowledge base but it also requires providing patients with genuine care. In nursing school in order for us to progress through the program we all had to be competent in drug calculations, sterile techniques, and physical assessments to list a few. So once we entered the workforce we had some entry level competencies. In my five years of nursing I have become competent in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Sepsis treatment, the use of i-STAT handheld blood analyzer, and correct usage of the electrocardiogram

Having worked in the fields of education, behavioral and mental health has broadened my perspective on which path I will make the focus of my current goals. However, having such a broad range of experience made it difficult to determine how the knowledge gained from the work I was doing in each field could be translated and developed into a clearer path. Consequently, I placed certain goals on hold, the main one being obtaining a professional license. I aspire to gain professional experience in the field of nursing, because of personal experiences that have led me to select this career. My passion for care-taking within the nursing realm stems from a passion at young age to render aid and experiences very dear to my heart. My care-taking skills began while I was caring for children at church, as an assistant to both the Children’s and Youth Department. When a child would arrive ill, I would make sure that little contact was made with other children to contain the illness. I also made sure the child would wash their hands thoroughly before consuming meals and would take an additional precaution of washing down tables and toys to diminish the spread of germs.…

One of the main aspects of this is being aware and working within the limits of competence (NMC 2015). Paganini and Yoshikawa Egry (2011) described competence as using the knowledge and experience gained from training and effectively putting it into practice appropriately and responsibly. By being aware of your limits it prevents nurses completing duties that they have not been fully trained in. This prevents care being detrimental and focuses on providing person centred care. McCormack and McCance (2010) Framework supports that being professionally competent is an important prerequisite of person centred…

Towards the end of the Wizard of Oz movie, while the whole Yellow Brick Road gang was being addressed by the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz, the dog Toto ran off to the side, pulled back on a curtain, and showed that a normal-looking humbug of a person was operating cranks and levers. For a short while, the normal-looking man kept yanking levers and cranking cranks, and said into the microphone (which made the Great and Powerful Wizard speak the same words) "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! I AM The Great And Powerful Wiz…" Then he gives up, because he knows his trick has been seen through and there's nothing that can fix it. In other words, he wanted everyone to keep being impressed by the big flashy magic show, and ignore that they might have found out how the trick really works.…
