Professional Communication Course Reflection

Of all the courses I decided to take this semester, Professional Communication has by far been the most beneficial. The material covered in this course provided me with skills for future application. Unlike other courses, the material is relevant to my professional career development. Overall, this course impacted my self-view, especially my abilities. Personally, the material can be applied to allow to take more risks and experience situations which provoke internal fear. In addition, the class provided new insight about cultural awareness. Despite the vast material discussed, these topics have influenced my perception of personal and professional identity. In general, my writing skills have improved over the semester. I have never in my career as a college student experienced an intensive writing course. At first I was pretty bummed about having to do something I have no interest in. I learned new things about how I am portraying myself to others through verbal and non-verbal communication. The video, “Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are” by Amy Cuddy described the differences between power-dynamics among people. As a future employee, I need to be aware of these skills when going into interviews. The video made me more conscious of how I utilize non-verbal skills. Generally, communication is conveyed through confidence or anxiety. Even if I am just walking to class I mentally note how I am walking. If I catch myself looking down, I make sure to put my head up. Previously, I did not notice when I would subconsciously look like I was unapproachable. Outside of the classroom, I acknowledge the fact people are drawn to others who show confidence, even if it is not authentic. I know I still need to work on my self-presentation, but given the skills and materials of this course, I know I will be able to
