Wesley Walker, a 59 year old ex-football player, says he feels like an old man according to projects.newsday.com. He was once known to be as fast as the flash by his colleagues. The reason he feels like this is due to the many intense hits he sustained during his 13 year career. His body can sometimes daunt his choice to play football. This helps lead us to the question, are athletes overpaid? Many professional athletes get paid millions of dollars. Some people think that these athletes are overpaid and some think they are not. They do make more than nurses, doctors, and firefighters, but that is because they have a short career and receive many injuries. Their career is based almost completely on our entertainment. Some of the players do have …show more content…
Firstly, the professional athletes we watch and admire, have dedicated their whole lives up to this point to play this sport for our entertainment. They have made many sacrifices to go to college and to play in the NBA, such as leave their family and go far away. They have put in countless hours of work, training, and hard work to get where they are. Secondly, the athletes need enough money to support themselves, their families, and pay off any debts or bills that they may have. Many athletes have post-career chronic health problems and health disorders due to the strain athletes constantly put on their body. It doesn’t help that the athletes tend to protract their careers to make more and win championships. Lastly, the athletes have suffered from brain damage and memory loss. The athletes have repeatedly been injured and that is not healthy for the human body. The athletes put their bodies on the line every day by risking brain injuries and other serious injuries. Most of the athletes use the money they don’t use and donate it to charities or help people with their struggles. These are the reasons why I think athletes are not overpaid.
Although athletes do all of these things, they do make a lot more money than the nurses, doctors, firefighters, and policemen. The athletes do have pretty big paychecks that can be a little too much. Millions of dollars is a lot of money. The reason for this is the athletes go to work everyday

When asked in a debate if they are overpaid or not there were advocates for both sides and a lot of the people who thought they weren’t overpaid had reasons a lot like “They are being rewarded for their hard work and dedication” (“Are Football Players Overpaid”). This is true, they did work for this their whole lives and it was not easy by any means; however, the same could be said for everyone who takes hard classes in high school and college in order to pursue a job that requires a high gpa. That is also very hard work, it may not be physically hard but it is mentally difficult and they need to dedicate just as much time to their studies as football players need to dedicate to their practices. Despite this, they are not making $2,100,000 every year. They worked hard, they dedicated their whole lives to getting to this job.…

One reason i feel they are not overpaid is they had earned to be there they had earned to be playing on that field. Also the better you are the more the teams are going to want to pay for you to be on their team. I also know that athletes had injuries that can cost up to $70,000. Like Paul George when he snapped his leg is basketball that costed approximately $65,000 dollars for surgery. One example is Tom Brady he is a 5 time super bowl champ quarterback.…

I am personally a collegiate athlete and knows what an athlete goes through. Players shouldn’t get paid millions of dollars like professional athletes, because why would players go on to try and play professionally. On the contrary they should deserve some type of revenue whether it's for clothes shopping, take someone out on a date, gas money, etc. For example that’s the same thing as me asking my friend to do something for me and he does all the work while I sit back and relax.…

They are growing up and need to learn how to live on their own without mom and dad sending them money all the time, there is not time for a job. While the college coaches are making six figures, these athletes are lucky to even get 100 dollars. Many argue that Paying these athletes would lose competitiveness of the sports but they are wrong because, many professional athletes get paid by their performance, so it’s a competition to be the best you can be so you can get paid at the most possible. The money that these athletes make for their school, doesn’t even contribute to their universities at all because if they did their would be more academic opportunities in america. I think it is important to pay these athletes because, many don’t have wealthy parents that can support them while they are in college, these athletes have no one to rely on.…

I believe they are paid too much. According to Mackenzie Carro who believes athletes are not overpaid. She states “we’re the ones who crowd the tv and pack the stadiums when it snows and rains”. In contrast I disagree because seventy-million dollars athletes make for playing a sport is too much money. Looking at people who serve and protect our country they don’t make close to as much as athletes.…

However, they are very prone to injuries since they play such violent games and play as hard as they can so that they will win. So, they should be paid a good sum of money, just not that much. USA Today College states, “...while athletes are putting their bodies on the line, they are doing so voluntarily.” Athletes are supported by millions of people and they complain about how they don’t get enough money for when they get hurt. Even if these athletes got hurt and they didn’t have enough money to pay for knee replacement, their fan wouldn’t let it happen.…

They ask for the money they get and get it most times, they get paid for entertaining people, get paid more than people with pro jobs that help people and more. I believe the millions of money they get they don’t deserve. Also when there career comes to an end or/and they get injured most of them do not have a backup plan, and since they don’t have a backup plan they have millions of dollars as their salary making them not to need a backup plan. In conclusion I believe that pro athletes do not deserve the salary they get and that their salary is over exorbitant. I say that because entertaining people does not help anyone.…
