As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, my on-going concern would be that not all mentally ill patients receive adequate medical care. Psychiatric symptomatology is often so blatant that underlying physical and/or medical problems get overlooked. Many of the mentally ill do not have a good family support system and their understanding of a treatment regime may be inadequate and contribute to noncompliance. My goal would be to blend the interpersonal and biological to provide psychiatric care thereby capitalizing on the therapies that have measurable outcomes and demonstrate effectiveness.
I believe that my nursing experience in an acute care setting combined with the psychiatric nurse practitioner training I will receive in this program will assist me in becoming a scholar practitioner who will be able to strengthen my community by providing quality, effective, and cost-efficient treatment to the mentally ill
