Like every part of the life, there are ethical and unethical behaviors in science. Not only being a hardworking and knowledgeable scientist but also to be an ethical one is our responsibility to our work, co-workers, and to the world. Every scientist of course allowed to make mistakes. However, the way of handling a situation may show how fair is this scientist. In Ayşe Küçük and Mehmet Ak’s case, there are lots of ethical flaws and almost none of them handled properly.
Firstly, being a shareholder of the company, OncoGEN, Prof. Ak may not be able to properly carry on his work in the Big University. His responsibilities for this company may take too much of his time and cause a conflict of effort. His PhD student …show more content…
If we look at the first condition of this agreement, it disables Ayşe to get in contact with another scientist that she might think would be helpful for her to improve her work and prevents her to get possibly useful opinions from her peers. For the third condition I am not sure if it is an ethical concern but 12 hours of work per weekday seems too much from a graduate student to ask. Sometimes a scientist have to work much longer hours but making her do this everyday feels cruel, a researcher should be arrange his/her schedule himself/herself if they are able to meet the deadline on their own. Additionally, making her record her work hours might make her feel a little untrusted. I think between a professor and students there should be trust. If we think about the relationship between Ayşe and the company OncoGEN have all the rights to ask Ayşe to do that of course. For the second condition, we do not know if the other members of the lab is also employees of the company. If they have to discuss this results just because Prof. Ak told them to it is wrong, they are just students and they are asked to sacrifice their time for a work that being done for …show more content…
Ak and Ayşe invented a drug that saves lots of lives. However, they could have reached the same success by handling problems properly. In this case they cheated, stole and were very unfair. They would also have treat as many people as they did now by being fair and ethical. The research of Dr. Blue is left unappreciated now, OncoGEN which is a company abuses its employees in some levels is gaining lots of money because of Dr. Blue’s work. The misrepresentation of results may interrupt the further work of other scientist on this drug and mislead them. In the long run, the ignored result may cause problems for the people treated with this drug. I think not being fair and ethical shadows the success of researchers and decreases the value and reliability of their
