Shell Energy is the largest and most innovative oil and gas company that will be around longer than Total, Exxon, Chevron, & BP. The company operates thousands of gas stations across the United States and recently started to research more about alternative energy. Phil Anderson informed us that Shell is very competitive and always has to “reshape the portfolio and back away from heavy Alaskan oil” and move toward integrated gas like British Gas. Shell recently merged with British Gas and Phil Anderson believes that the decision is “a stroke of genius” since the downfall on the oil and gas industry. Unfortunately, this industry has had a downturn and thousands have lost their job which is why alternative energy is at a rise …show more content…
Oil is a necessity in order to import and export products, get you to and from work, and travel around the world. According to the Shell website, “Shell has been preparing for the challenges of a lower-carbon future. Our New Lens Scenarios describe plausible futures, where renewable energy sources like solar and wind could provide up to 40% of energy globally by 2060, and the sun could become the world’s largest primary energy source a decade later.” I believe this is a great change for Shell because in our generation we have more conscious people understanding that the environment cannot survive if we keep polluting. Natural gas is the cleanest burning hydrocarbon and Shell produces the lowest CO2 biofuels and one-tenth the air pollutants that coal uses. Shell is huge in Brazil and is known for being a biofuel company but in the United States we are known as Shell Oil & Gas. Another genius move for Shell is when Shell merged with Raízen which is much known for making ethanol from sugar cane in Brazil. Raízen is one of the most competitive energy companies in the world and according about us page on the Raízen website “contributes to the economic development of the country respecting both people and the environment”. Raízen and Brazil understands that the world is moving toward being eco-friendly and the United States actually passed the Clean Air Act in 2007 which is assisting …show more content…
Another great opportunity for Shell is they define themselves not as an oil & gas company but as an energy company. When you see Shell rollout with alternative energy ideas and creations they will have more of a competitive advantage and bigger opportunity for being an alternative energy company than Exxon, Chevron, or BP. Shell already has some interesting scenarios on their website for renewable energy, low carbon electricity, natural gas, and carbon pricing mechanisms. These scenarios on the Shell website, energy and innovation, suggest that “society will grow its renewable energy to 80% of an energy system to achieve a long term goal of near net-zero emissions by 2100.” Shell has had experience and interest in the wind business for ten years. Shell also suggests we need to address climate change and for us to accomplish zero emissions in the environment that we must use low carbon electricity to power our lifetime. The use of electricity will need to come from renewables and natural gas. Van Beurden believed “no hesitation to predict that in years to come solar will be the dominant backbone of our energy system, certainly of the electricity system.” Another great thing about shell is
