Envision a restless third grader sitting at her desk right after recess waiting for class to begin. However, in its place, students gazed at the television witnessing a moment in history they would never forget, on September 11, 2001. I remember vividly, hearing sirens blaring, and people screaming; seeing emergency services helping those wounded, families searching for their loves ones and devote citizens risking their lives just to help others. I wanted to comprehend and interpret these types of current events in our expeditiously changing and advancing world. This was the moment I began aspiring to dedicate my life to assist, serve and support my community and government at some capacity.

Alongside ambition, and through various obstacles I became the first person in my family to earn a bachelor’s degree. With dedication and perseverance, I worked fulltime for the government as a United States Postal Worker while completing my studies as a fulltime student. This is where I developed the ability to solve complex problems and make valuable decisions with high accountability. Along with the rigorous skill set I gained throughout undergrad, I want to continue my education so I’m able to apply these attributes when current events and economic social issues affect myself and the community directly.

When I moved to California two years ago, I found a great room for rent with awesome roommates. They were all college graduates and very articulate and knew so much whether it was to do with history, or knowing their way around the garden. Baca and Malcolm X both inspired while in prison to become articulate, because they wanted to be heard and feel free. Like Malcolm X being inspired by his fellow inmate named Bimbi, by the way he would attract people’s attention just by the way he spoke, and having so much knowledge to share, I was inspired by these beautiful young people who could make any topic they spoke about sound interesting. At this time in my life I decided I should apply for college and begin with a new outlook on education.…

Although I graduated from high school in 2000, I didn’t begin working toward my Bachelor’s degree until 2012. My career aspirations were simple: get a job, make some money. I had a small amount of savings allocated for my college career, but greatly underestimated the financial obligations of furthering my education. I survived a little more than one semester before my funding ran dry. I began working, and used what was left in my savings to spend the summer in Europe.…

Every semester I ask myself the same three questions and the longer I have been pursuing post secondary the more I think about the costs of post-secondary in comparison to the benefits of my degree. I work part time at Bed Bath and Beyond to help my parents pay rent and keep food on the table so every time I look at class registration I always artistically stack my classes like Greek columns to grab as many hours as I can at work. My father always says that you can’t do anything without money and it’s the truth you can’t, and it shames me because the academic route I decided to take isn’t known for the Steve Jobs of the world but rather the eco-terrorists and political upstarts. Public policy has always been my passion because of the social…

While watching the videos of the tragic happenings during the day of September 11th, 2001 everyone had the chance to reflect on how they would act if they were stuck in an intense situation like that, would they run away as fast as possible or would they help the injured…

Being raised in a Nigerian household, I learned that success requires dedication, but a successful person also inspires others to be dedicated. I knew that my parents could not pay for four children to attend college, and I could have worried all day and night thinking about how I going to get through college financially. That did not stop me, however, from taking the responsibility onto myself and striking when the opportunity arises. Repeating scientific facts outloud like a broken record or having an independent study session for four additional hours are things I would do given an extra day before the exam. One goal that is greater than my personal aspirations is to have a direct impact on my community so that children can have another person to relate to.…
