The ending was to me very tragic. It looks that last line “he have his goodness now” raises a question, to which there is no right answer. Reverent Hale did have a very good point. Although Proctor’s character was frequently praised for his integrity, did he help his family by dying? His wife and the unborn child will have to make it without him. His choice of death can also be viewed as a form of suicide, which is not supported by many Christians. It can also be interpreted as being selfish.
