What is a proctor? The Merriam-Webster dictionary (n.d.) defines a proctor as “one appointed to supervise students (as at an examination).” I have not found specific information on why University of the People (UoPeople) requires proctors for some exams, however if I were to guess I believe that it would be mostly to prove the identity of the person taking the test. Since UoPeople is an all online university, there is no way of knowing who is actually attending the classes and learning the material. By requiring a proctor during key exams, the university is able to prove that the student that they believe is enrolled has at least attended and taken that particular exam. By requiring this criteria, UoPeople ensures the integrity of the proctor, exam taker and the university. To register a proctor, while enrolling in a course the requires a proctor, you will be prompted to enter information pertaining to the proctor.
I had originally chosen to use my boss as a proctor. He was willing to proctor my exams and met all of the criteria, however about a week ago I received an email from UoPeople about ProctorU, an online third-party proctoring service. I believe that I will be using ProctorU instead of my boss as a proctor. The prices seem to be reasonable with the courses that I checked being less than $20US. Additionally, I’ll have the benefit of being able to take the exam from my home instead of at work.
In conclusion, a proctor is literally someone trusted to supervise a student while they take their exams. The proctor should be impartial and beyond reproach. Finally, UoPeople makes it easy to add a proctor when registering for a course that requires
