A beautiful dark haired, blue-eyed young woman of the age of fifteen sits down to film herself engaging in the “Tide Pod Challenge.” As she bites down on the small, highly concentrated package of detergent, the great tension on the tight plastic packaging bursts, exploding the contents of the pod into her mouth. She frantically coughs in between gags as minuscule amounts of laundry soap creep down her throat. Swallowing the detergent causes burns to her esophagus and stomach, as well as gastrointestinal distress. She gasps for air while holding her throat as the EMT’s rush her out of the slightly pixelated camera’s view. The screen goes black as if to intensify the anticipation for the safety of the young girl. Social media is the way so many people can spread information like wildfire. Although these outlets can’t prevent everything posted through their application, they take preventative measures to limit what users can share, see, and watch. Brian Feldman, an author for New York Magazine, shares that “Youtube’s Community Guidelines prohibit content that’s intended to encourage dangerous activities that have an inherent risk of physical harm”(Do I Dare), to emphasize the effort social media outlets put in to keeping harmful content out of viewer’s eyes.
