Procrastination is a problem that people face everyday in tasks both big and small. It is not uncommon to realize that most everyone has trouble with procrastination in some way or another. My client, Madison Waltrip, is no different. Madison came to me to help her bring an end to her continuous procrastination. In order to help her better I felt I needed to do some more research into what procrastination is and what causes us as people to do it.
The first article I came across was, Procrastination revisited – Just do it … now! According to the article, “Procrastination is a disabling habit that can affect one both mentally and physically, causing anxiety, tension, stress, and fatigue. Procrastination is the intentional act of delaying

Students who procrastinate often have low self-esteem and are lacking in time management skills, perseverance, and have higher levels of frustration and depression. Internal factors involved with procrastination deal with a student’s personality, competence, cognitive, and mental/physical states. External factors involve a student’s private life and university related aspects. There are also consequences to procrastination that include three levels. These levels from topmost level to bottom are no consequences, positive consequences, and negative consequences of …show more content…
Procrastination can result from both internal and external factors that affect a person. Doing this research will allow me better help Madison because it taught me that procrastination is not just a result of laziness, but can be a result of multiple stressors and different situations. I also learned that some students have trouble with procrastination because they have very high standards. When students do not think they will do something well enough, or up to their standards, they can push the work back to do another time when they feel they may do better. From talking with Madison, it seems to me that her problem with procrastination has a little bit to do with her standards and her stress levels. When Madison feels like she has too much going on, or that she would not meet her standards on an assignment, she pushes to work to another time. This research has helped me because I can help Madison to work on the underlying issues that cause the procrastination, and not just the procrastination itself.
Although the articles were very informative, they were still lacking in information. The information the articles were lacking in was interventions or programs that could help with procrastination. They were all very well informed of what causes procrastination and ways to help deal with it but did not lay out clear steps or goals to put an end to

Although I’ll admit I’ve procrastinated at times, for the next two years I look forward to avoid doing so because I know, from past experience, how terrible a habit it is. In middle school, I made the wrong choice and procrastinated very often, forming a bad habit that I brought to PACE ninth grade. Because middle school curriculum was significantly easier, procrastination was not a significant problem, but in high school it definitely became one. It was then I realized if I…

In her essay, “You Too Can Procrastinate”, Emily suggests that, if done properly, procrastination is not always a detrimental occurrence. The author lists the following steps in her postponement ritual: Do anything to keep from sitting down to write; call a friend and talk to them for 15 to 20 minutes about anything other than the paper in order to build the necessary tension; prepare to write by gathering essential tools and snack and placing them at the workstation; collect ideas related to the topic at hand; finally, sit down and write the paper. The author offers that, if these six steps are followed, “you too can become a master procrastinator.” As a procrastinator myself, it is quite difficult not to agree with Emily’s point of view.…
