Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

Process analysis is useful in taking an abstract concept or idea and describing how it works by breaking it into several distinct and easily understandable phases. Kurt Vonnegut Jr. uses this technique in “How to Write with Style” to explain how writers must keep things simple, edit ruthlessly, and write about something they know. He then goes on and describes eight different steps to write with style: find subject you care about, do not ramble, keep it simple, have the guts to cut, sound like yourself, say what you mean to say, pity the readers, and “for really detailed advice”. He uses authoritative sources throughout his essay to support his argument. For instance, in the “Keep It Simple” section, he uses examples from Shakespeare and the…

Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

Throughout the semester my research process changed in ways that benefitted my paper as well as helped me organize my thoughts in an orderly manner. My research skills have changed because previously when I had to find information my first thought would be to go on Google and search my topic. If I was writing a paper that required a specific number of paragraphs or pages I would typically plan my paper using the four square method. If I was writing an important paper I would write a rough draft, then as I was typing it I would revise it and fix any mistakes I found. One thing that remained consistent in my writing process, no matter the type of paper, is after I wrote the paper I would try to find more grade level appropriate words instead of the simple words I originally used. While writing essays for this class I came to find it is better to combine my writing processes to write the best possible essay I could. I found the best steps for me to take in writing my paper are to write my ideas down in some form.…
