Process To Establish An Effective Ethical Leader

During the 2010 AELC Innovation Club, Barbara Etter stressed that “You can be very effective as a leader but highly unethical.” This is due to the fact what is ethical can be perceived differently based on personal “value-system” (Hanson, 2009). Northouse (2015) emphasized that ethics is infused in every action of a leader (p.266). For example, ethical considerations involving dimensions of power, moral obligations, innovation, occupational health and safety, and organizational culture, all can impact how a leader is perceived and received (Etter, 2010). Etter (2010) described the pharmaceutical industry as an example of a setting where the lines of ethics are compromised for the sake of profitability and innovation. Another setting where ethical lines are blurred or crossed are in the political arena, where special interest often overshadow the greater good for all. …show more content…
This process can be learned and improve how a leader is received and perceived. Refining one’s approach through the continual reflective process can establish an effective ethical leader and direct their decisions toward the greater good. My personal position when addressing the ethical situations is to first be guided by my morals. My morals are steeped in my values of God, family, and service. I recognize my morals may be different from some but my approach to addressing ethical considerations is not guided by converting others but to achieve the greater good. I also acknowledge universal values which also fuel ethical behavior. Northouse (2015) broke-down ideal actions of an ethical leader are as (1) showing respect, (2) serving others, and (3) showing justice (p. 266-267).
