The main goal of the Anaconda Plan was to create a total naval blockade of the Southern states. For the plan to be successful, it had to blockade more than 3,500 miles of coast from Virginia to Mexico and up the Mississippi River. It was necessary to strategically blockade and control major ports around the southern coast so the plan was impractical and was a little too extensive. There was so little effect that not even a single one of the shots pierced the ships armor or could stop it. The CSS Virginia seemed like it was invincible, but under the command of Lieutenant John Worden, The Union ironclad USS Monitor prepared to defend the rest of the Union Naval fleet. After several hours of close combat, the Monitor finally headed for the safety of shallow waters and the Virginia broke off the engagement as well. Although the Union suffered more casualties and damaged vessels, the battle ended as a draw and the Union blockade still remained. It ended with a draw because the damage they could inflict upon the each other was just too insignificant. These ships never met again after the Battle of Hampton
