Procedure:
Isolation of Caffeine from Tea Leaves
One tea bag was obtained and weighed. A 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask was acquired with 0.3 grams of sodium carbonate. The tea bag was placed inside the flask with 100 mL of water and the 0.3 grams of sodium carbonate. Then, a boiling chip was added to the flask and the flask was placed on a hot plate. Sodium carbonate was added to the flask because it served as a weak base. The sodium carbonate cleaved the ester bond of tannin, which made tannin a water-soluble compound in the solution. The flask was placed on a hot plate for 20 minutes. Once the 20 minutes passed, the flask was taken off the hot plate
