Hormones operate using a type of mechanism. Releasing these hormones can trigger actions in particular target cells. One receptor on the cell membrane binds to one type of hormone. The binding hormones change the shape of the receptor, which causes the response to the hormone. Through the process of steroid hormone action, the hormone goes through a certain process of two steps. The hormone binds to receptors on the nuclear membrane once it is inside the cell that produces an activated hormone-receptor complex that binds to DNA, activating genes that increase the protein production. The action of small, lipid-soluble steroid hormones does not occur by second messenger. Being lipid soluble causes the hormones to pass directly through the target cell’s plasma membrane. Once inside, the hormones pass through the cytoplasm and enter the nucleus. In the nucleus, they bind with a receptor to form a hormone-receptor complex. It acts on DNA which causes the formation in the cytoplasm then produces special effects in the target cell. …show more content…

They are whole proteins, consisting of shorter chains of amino acids or simply versions of single amino acids. A protein hormone acts as a “first messenger” by delivering a message from the cells of a gland to membrane receptor sites on the target cells. The interaction between the hormone and the receptor site is often compared to fitting a key into a lock.
