Physical health is important to musicians as the act of performing a piece of music is a physical act. Without the correct physical action the performance can be negatively affected. Different musicians may depend on different parts of the body during performances, for example a singer, as a whole, would not have to use their hands during a performance, and could as such still perform with, for example a broken finger. A violinist however, could not perform with a broken finger as both hands are needed to play the instrument.

Musicians should eat a balanced diet. Broadly speaking, a balanced diet means eating something from the main five groups at every meal, or over the course of a day. These five groups being: carbohydrates, which provide energy. Proteins, which are used for muscle repair. Fats, which are also used for energy and insulation. Vitamins, minerals and, in addition, you should make sure you drink enough water (Farruque and Hansford 2008). Malnutrition results from an unbalanced diet, either due to an excess of one component or lack of another.
Eating disorders are a mental disorder that changes the person’s normal food consumption. As Watkins and Parks both state, dependence on alcohol as well as substance abuse can also lead to mental health issues. The brain, after being exposed to alcohol or a substance for long periods of time becomes dependent on it, causing the person with the addiction to become dependent in order to deal with certain things in everyday life.
