The Game of Hockey Hockey is a physical game and many guidelines are needed to keep the game safe. The game has rules, special equipment, and penalties to keep it safe. In hockey there are a lot of rules that players are required to follow. Some rules of the game are that the player must hit the puck with the stick to score, the puck can be kicked, but not into the net to score. On the ice there are three forwards, one goalie, and two defensemen. The only time a team has less than six people on the ice is during a penalty, at that time a player is deferred to the penalty box leaving only five players for a period of time. When one team is playing with only five players the other team has the opportunity of a power play meaning that they have the advantage of using six players against the team experiencing the penalty only having five players. There is not always a goalie, sometimes the goalie is pulled at the end of the game to take advantage of adding another player such as a forward or defenseman in effort to score. The game is 3, 20 minute quarters for a total of 60 minutes of play time. A penalty shot is awarded when a player is obstructed before they shoot. During a penalty shot the player gets a shot at the net while the goalie tries to defend the goal. A penalty is called when a player breaks the rules, the result is getting sent to the penalty box. Some common penalties are checking(when player checks other from behind), fighting(when players engage in throwing punches). There also many other penalties, one other is interference(when player checks opponents when he does not have puck, or keeps player from picking up stick or takes it).
