Process Essay: The Effects Of Poverty On Children

Many people are affected by poverty. Poverty not only affects adults, but it also affects the children who will be the future of our society. Many people have come together to help out those in need like the organization Salvation Army. They provide food, shelter, and clothing. Is there more that an average person can do to help children affected by poverty? My research topic is over the effects that poverty has on children’s health and cognitive development and things that can be done to help improve this problem.

For Senior Capstone I began my placement at the Salvation Army Center of Hope. I knew I wanted to volunteer at a place where I could make a true difference in someone’s life and I thought that helping out at the Salvation Army was a perfect fit. I helped them with their homework. Majority of the kids I worked with were either in elementary school or middle school. At the Salvation Army Center of Hope they would have the cafeteria open for children to come and receive help with anything they needed, such as homework. Being in my placement so far has caused me to feel that I could make a difference.

I plan to find articles and studies over child poverty. I also will have my placement supervisor help me with my topic since she experience seeing children affected by poverty. I will also have statistics to help support my thesis. I will research the problems children of poverty face and how it contributes to the child's health and their development. By finding information about poverty and child’s health and development I can then come up with ideas an average person could do to help.
