In physical therapy there are a heap of techniques used to ease, relieve, and ultimately get rid of pain. Everything from physical rehab to psychological and mental rehab are used across the US, but one new technique is beginning to raise a lot of questions and concerns behind its practices. Dry needling is a safe and effective technique used to treat myofascial pain, which is a chronic condition that affects the tissues that cover the muscles. The current issue is whether the use of dry needling is within the professional and legal scope of physical therapy practice and how should the American Physical Therapy Association solve the problem of educating PT’s and patients on the practice of dry needling.

Though the risk is very low there is always the potential risk of significant adverse events, such as lungs and large blood vessels. In a study done by Leonoid Kalichman, a physical therapist at the Recanati School for Community Health Professions, too assesse the efficiency of dry needling for rehabilitation of low back pain. The conclusion was came to that there is evidence of pain relief and functional improvement of chronic low back pain with the use of dry needling(Kalichman). With respect to all medical rehab practices there are always side effects. Essentially, dry needling is cheap, easy to learn, and carries a low risk. Its effectiveness has been confirmed in numerous studies and has been deemed safe by the APTA. Dry needling can be used as part of complex treatment for injuries to the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves and can be applied by a wide variety of healthcare professionals such as physicians, orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists, pain specialists, dentists, and physical therapists.
