The middle school that I currently work in, has several students that are English learners. It was not easy not knowing choosing a student to work with, since many students need the help. After talking to Mrs. Kline the intervention facilitator she directed me to a 6th grade teacher, Mr. Tate. Mr. Tate teaches language arts to the students who have problems with literacy in learning. The students are both English learners and students who are new to the United States. After talking to Mr. Tate he directed to a student who has only been in the United States for six months. The name of my tutee is Brandon Chavez, who came from Honduras. Brandon is in the 6th grade and is eleven years old. Before meeting with Brandon on the first day I viewed …show more content…
The teacher mentioned that Brandon does indeed need help in reading, writing, and talking; since his skills on all three of them are low. The teacher has noticed that he needs help with reading since he never wants to try to say the words he does not know. In regards to the writing, the teacher told me he needs help with writing simple sentences, since he often asks the teacher on how to spell or to translate certain words for him. On an occasion that I went to go observe Brandon in class, I was able to see that he does not want to participate in group discussion and instead he stays quite. When Brandon does talk in class it usually is because he is answering yes-or-no question but none that require him to think critically. The teacher recommended that to help Brandon I should aim to target all three reading, writing, and …show more content…
Being able to get a sample CELDT workbook from Mrs. Kline was an advantage, since it will helpful to accomplish the three skills and he will be able to get practice for the exam. An additional workbook that was also provided by his teacher is tittle Word by Word, which will help with vocabulary, grammar, and listening activities. The two workbooks will be beneficial since it will give him practice he can use when he takes the CELDT this summer. I do not have copies of the answer he completed in the workbook Word by Word, since he would forget it in class. In regards to the CELDT workbook, I only have a few pages but for the ones I do not I am adding pictures from an online sample. My goal was to include the three, but if not I will make sure to at least use

The classroom had 17 children in total, 1 of which was an English Learner. His name was Carlos and, saying his name to me was the only word he said in class for the duration of the time that I had been in the classroom. Carlos is young boy whose parents are completely Spanish. I was told by Mrs Varvil, that even at parent conferences only the mother has understand of what is being said and is able to partially converse. When I first entered the classroom, the children were all on the floor working together to write a letter to Ruby Bridges, who became their topic in education on race and segregation in the 1950/1960s.…

According to classroom observation, progress monitoring data and assessment information, Zachary’s strengths are in decoding, vocabulary, and reading fluency. His weakness is in reading fluency and comprehension. He can comprehend short/simple paragraphs. Based on standard referenced tests and classroom tests administered Zachary reading comprehension is slightly below grade level. He have shown some progress toward his reading goal; however his reading level is at an “S” (EOY goal level "U") which is well below grade level expectations and requires intensive reading intervention for fluency and comprehension skills.…

To be able to ensure that the children you work with are not illiterate you need to be able to recognise signs of literacy difficulties. As an education support worker you need to understand that children develop at different rates. Some children will pick up on things very easily and others will not. Sometime children who are behind on literacy development will catch up on thier own but there will be some children who will need extra help. Struggling early in their literacy development can cause delays in their development over the long term.…

Today we focused on organizing his notebook and reading the book "Maniac Magee. " Nathan enjoys talking about the book with me and has increasingly shown interest in reading more of the story to learn about the characters. He does struggle at times with reading specific vocabulary words and with reading at a certain pace. I recommend that Nathan get into the habit of reading more frequently aloud so that he can build up his confidence. When we first started reading his book, he did not want to read aloud because he did not want to make mistakes or take too long to read, but the more we read together, the more interested he is in getting through the book.…

Before we started writing, I told Triven we would be writing for ten minutes and that he could write a narrative or true story on any of the topics that we listed the day before. It took him ten minutes to write two sentences, so I gave him some more time. We spent a total of fourteen minutes writing, I had to prompt him to keep writing about 3-4 times. Triven is in 3rd grade and he exhibited very little enthusiasm when reading his piece back to me. He mumbled and didn’t seem very confident with what was written.…

    Juan Observation

One of my hypotheses as to why he has the comprehension issue is because he is way too focused on being able to pronounce the word correct that he does not pay too much attention to what he is reading. Another area that he seems to need help in is when he gets frustrated when he is not able to read a word correctly or does not know what the word means. He tends to become upset and want to stop reading all together. This is a big problem because I seem to be spending more time trying to engage him in being able to read again than actually reading itself. Other than these two main areas, Juan seems to be doing very well in his reading based on his age and the grade in which he is on.…

Literacy Instruction Framework The ability to read and write does not develop naturally. Teaching reading and writing to emergent readers and writers needs careful planning and systematic instruction. In a joint position and statement of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and International Reading Association (IRA), it stated that “learning to read and write is a complex, multifaceted process that requires a wide variety of instructional approaches” (1998, p. 206). Children need regular meaningful and active experiences with print so they can understand from an early reading and writing are valuable life- tools.…

Reading and writing is everywhere in this world and as teachers we must push our students to understand literacy no matter what content we are teaching. Literacy is included in all subjects, it might not be the main source of a certain subject but it is important in every subject. Other teachers might not understand that literacy is needed for every course that they teach. In the article Literacy and Language as Learning in Content-Area Classes: A Departure From "Every Teacher a Teacher of Reading" Douglas Fisher and Gay Ivey explains why literacy is important in every subject. Literacy has now been a national focus and is receiving the attention that is requiring for students to become successful.…
