In 2010, Americans produced about 250 million tons of garbage and only 34 percent was recycled. According to an Opposing Views article called “Pollution”, on average each person accumulates at least 4.5 pounds …show more content…
First of, we will start with the parks and forest preserves in our community. In West Chicago, there are at least eleven parks and three forest preserves. Our plan is to place at least a total of three trash cans in each park. In each of the forest preserves we will add six trash cans and one seabin, because the area is much bigger. You are probably wondering how would we be able to accomplish this project? It is quite simple once we put all the pieces together. We would need to buy a total of 51 garbage cans, rent at least six trucks, and we also require a group of volunteers, specifically 12 total, that are strong and old enough for this job. These volunteers are people that want to help out the environment or seek community service for their personal benefit. We would also need the help of the teacher. Teachers could help by mentioning this topic to their students in order to make them aware that littering is harmful to them and their surroundings. Another way to get the word out, is by letting students create posters that would be hung around school and other public areas. A website would also be created to get the information out to everyone, not just students. The amount required to make this project work is estimated to be $44,882.21. This cost includes the total cost of the trash cans, sea bins, supplies, truck rentals, and meals for the volunteers. This expense barely puts a dent in the $1,000,000 we were allowed of spend. Therefore, the remaining money may be used to help fund other important issues that would improve the community.
There is no doubt that littering is harmful and getting worse, but if we work together then we can actually make a change. Yes, it will take time, but one day littering rates will decrease. And when that does happen, you will think back and tell your children, or even your grandchildren, that you made a change in the
