Gilbert K. Chesterson once said, “A good novel tells us the truth about its hero—the good and the bad.” In other words, a good book does not hide its hero's flaws. It shows the complete picture both the positive and the negative. Beowulf: A New Telling by Robert Nye is a story about the Land of the Danes, ruled by Hrothgar, that is being haunted by the evil monster Grendel. Beowulf a young man and, nephew of the king of the Geats, sets off on a journey to save Hrothgar and his kingdom.…
The Hero: Analyzing Beowulf and His Journey Mythology is a set of symbols humans use to describe their purpose and what each person is capable of achieving. In addition, mythology is composed of tales of heroes and their respective journeys. Each journey roughly follows the same cycle, called the monomyth. Created by Joseph Campbell in his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, the monomyth, or hero's journey, is the common template of a broad category of tales that involve a hero going on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed. There are a total of 17 stages of the monomyth, divided into three “acts,” so to speak (“Campbell's 'Hero's Journey' Monomyth”).…
The epic poem Beowulf tells a story of a hero coming from a different land to lift the shroud of evil off Herot. Hero’s in an epic poem must exemplify traits of bravery, strength, courage, and the want to achieve immortality through heroic actions and deeds. In the poem Beowulf the main character Beowulf exemplifies all of these traits. Bravery, all epic heroes possess this trait especially Beowulf. The beginning of the story, Grendel travels into Herot and kills thirty people.…
Beowulf is the story of a great hero who saves the Danish kingdom from the wrath of Grendel and his mother, and dies at the hands of a dragon. Beowulf is seen as a typical hero who selflessly saves the day, but Beowulf could have been suffering from an internal ordeal with his pride. Beowulf can be seen as a story of external and internal ordeals, such as cowardice, pride, and other natural human tendencies. Beowulf is first introduced as the great warrior who is going to eradicate the Danish kingdom of their problem.…
In Beowulf, I found myself idolizing over the strong and fearless hero. He was what I would call “the perfect hero”, because not only did he get the job done, but he did it so with honor and modesty. In some cases it reminded me of the movie Hercules, where Hercules tried to show off as much as possible and show that he was better than everyone else to gain fame. While Beowulf used his famous strength to help those in need not to just gain fame, but because he knew he was undoubtedly the only one who could help.…

When Grendel whispered to Grendel while twisting his arm, Grendel was in pain, “‘Mama!’ I bawl shapes vague as lurking seaweed around us... the pain makes me howl.” . The primal emotions that make up who we are--fear and joy-- are present in Grendel, therefore reflecting on ourselves. By understanding the motives and inner thoughts of Grendel, we can contemplate ourselves and the real modern world.…
Deciding on whether Beowulf is flawed or is fundamentally good is a decision that has many possible answers, and mostly is not able to be decided fully upon. I believe Beowulf may have begun fighting as a reason to do good, but once he realized how much praise and fortune he would receive from the fights, he began to risk himself time and time again simply for the glory. It seems he may be blinded from this truth, however, since he believes himself to be the only hope of winning, specifically when he mentions, “he had no call / to go looking for some lesser champion,” when discussing Grendel’s attack and king Hygelac (2493-2495). It seems, also, as time progresses he becomes even more sure of himself. Looking at the speech he makes before fighting the dragon, Beowulf…
The Old English epic poem “Beowulf,” written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet, narratres the valiant journey of a young Geatish hero named Beowulf who travels to the land of the Danes to save them from the lurid demon, Grendel. Though Beowulf’s character epitomizes the Anglo-Saxon epic hero, Beowulf also possesses three major flaws that distract modern readers from his ultimate heroism. Beowulf’s first flaw, conceitedness, is apparent in the boasts he makes upon his arrival at Herot. Though it is obvious that the Geat is a talented and mighty warrior, his actions, not his continual gloats, should illuminate his skills and brilliance. Additionally, Beowulf’s energetic and competitive nature stimulates his need for action, often causing unpleasant situations.…
Throughout Beowulf there is an ever-present struggle between humans and monsters, civilisation and the uncivilised, however the way that Grendel’s mother is presented is a stark contrast to Grendel’s barbaric brutality, and we almost sympathise with her despite her role as an antagonist. Although Grendel’s mother “pounced upon [Beowulf]” (1545) in an animalistic fashion, her using a “broad, whetted knife” (1546) to attack him humanises her; unlike Grendel, who ripped men apart and ate them, she is capable of wielding a human weapon to vanquish her foe. Moreover, she also has a purpose for her murders, to “avenge / her only son” (1546-47) – as Chance remarks, “she is legally justified in pursuing her own feud given the tribal duty to avenge…
