Problems Faced In Odysseus In Homer's The Odyssey

When a soldier comes home, they have difficulties re entering society. Odysseus had problems re entering society because he has been gone for twenty years. Almost all soldiers face problems much like Odysseus did. Odysseus was gone for twenty years and some soldiers can be gone for that long or longer. When soldiers are gone for that long they start to have relationship failures like Odysseus had. Odysseus’ wife Penelope thought that Odysseus was dead like a soldier’s wife might think. When Odysseus was trying to sail home his ship kept getting blown in the wrong direction. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is given a bag of wind which contains all the winds except for the favorited west wind. Odysseus is told not to open the bag in which his men did and raging storms came out of the bag. This is much like a soldier trying to get back to normal after returning home. When the soldier gets home they try to fit in and may have difficulties, which is hard on the soldier because they don’t think they’ll ever get back to normal. Odysseus thought that he would never get home. The soldier will keep trying to get back to normal like Odysseus wouldn’t give up on trying to get home. A soldier is a different person because all of the things that happened to them in war. While Odysseus is trying to get his wife back, all the soldier is trying to do is get back to normal. Odysseus had to do a challenge to get Penelope back. The challenge was to string Odysseus’ bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe handles.
