Problem Posing Education

There has been a lot of finger pointing on why our education system is insufficient within the United States. Paulo Freire and John Henry Newman both theorized different styles of education. Freire, a Brazilian educator in the 1960’s came from a politically oppressed country posits, “education-as-praxis” or “problem posing education” which allows a cooperative and communicative relationship between the teacher and student (65). John Henry Newman, a converted Catholic back in 1800s conceived, “useless or liberal education” as seeking knowledge for own pursuit (53). In a modern education setting, Paulo Freire's education-as-praxis theory would work best; it allows cognitive skills, communication, and humanization. In “problem posing” education, students are encouraged to think outside the box for themselves. This allows students to think critically and gain skills. Freire writes, “Authentic thinking, thinking that is concerned about reality, does not take place in an ivory tower…[i]t is true that thought has meaning only when generated by action upon the world”(65). Freire writes, "Through [c]ommunication ….a new term emerges: teacher-student with students-teachers. The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach. They become jointly responsible for a process in which all grow"(66). In this (English 1302) is a great representation of communication. We (students) engage in dialogue and learn from each other’s’ interpretations of the reading material that is given to us. In Nobel Lecture, Toni Morrison explains, the bird represents language and she goes further into detail that we (culture) hold the fate of language in our hands and it is up to us if it lives or dies. We must learn to keep language alive
