At Perspectives’, students in Algebra face both the banking concept and problem-posing education in the classroom. During the first semester of the school year, students are to sit at their desks for an hour and watched as their teacher instructed them on how to complete challenging math problems. In the second hour, students would be given double-sided worksheets and packets from the teacher to show their comprehension of the lesson from the previous hour. This is considered the banking concept since the teacher is simply filling the students’ minds with how to work out an equation. It can be said that students are critical thinkers for knowing how to solve these problems, but what is being gained from knowing how to take the steps to solving …show more content…
As an English class, it was required of students to demonstrate their writing abilities through analyzing books given by the teacher and reflect on documentaries that were watched during the class period. For certain reading assignments that required critical thinking, students were to read certain pages of a book, write a short reflection, then the next day in class, get together in small groups to discuss what occurred in the pages that they read and their views upon specific issues brought up in the book. The teacher did not give the students a script on how they were to discuss their thoughts, nor did she have a definite set of questions she wanted answered in their group discussions. She gave students the freewill to solve their own questions and give answers to each other by being in a small group setting. A time where the teacher’s teaching style could mirror the banking concept in during classical literature readings. 21st century high school students would find it difficult to comprehend the plays of William Shakespeare, thus, the teacher would take much time out to guide her students on how to analyze his method of writing through working together to transform the words into modern language.
