Probation And Parole Compare And Contrast

Probation and parole have similarities as well as differences. Probation is ordered by a judge in court at the time of sentencing instead of a prison time. However, some of the jurisdictions required a short-term incarceration sentence followed by immediate probation which refers to as a split sentence. Probations have different supervision positions including active supervision, which obligate them to do a regularity report to a probation authority either by mail, in person, or by telephone. On the other hand, parole involves supervision in the community after the offender served time in prison. Some offenders return to prison or jail because of new crimes, but others go back for violating parole and probation conditions. “Over 230,000 parole violators were admitted to prison in 2005, accounting for more than one-third of all admissions”. (Public Safety Policy, 2007) In order to rise the success of people in parole and probation is to keep them crime and drug free. Keeping offender’s crime and drug free seems to be a common violation that leads the offender to be incarcerated. “Indigent offenders must have a stable residence, pay courts fees, fines and restitution, and support all dependents”. (Public Safety Policy, 2007) An offender who is in probation or parole must be continually employed, seeking employment, or attending high school. There are two types of violation that offenders face while they are in the community general conditions and special conditions. General conditions relate to offenders that obey all laws, those who stay away from alcohol and drug use, and those who report regularly to their probation or parole officer. Special conditions apply to offenders who are more difficult to deal with. Probation and parole supervise teenagers and adults to keep them in check and free from drugs and crime. Even though parole and probation have some differences at the end, both parole and probation involves supervision of offenders in the community and required procedures that need to be completed otherwise offenders can face incarceration. I think work release programs is beneficial to inmates because it helps them to interact with others, as well as to learn how to work for when they come out of prison.
