Pro-lifers Should be Advocates for all Children Many people who are pro-life are serious advocates of unborn children. Many are dedicated to a political position that would even abolish the right to abortion. While I respect this pro-life position, I believe that people who are truly pro-life should be consistent in their advocacy of all children -- unborn and born. As much as advocating for the lives of unborn children, pro-lifers should focus as well on protecting the interests of the nearly half million children in the US foster care system, of the many children who suffer from poverty, and of children who are exposed to extreme environmental threats.
If pro-lifers care about the lives of children as they maintain, then to be consistent in their advocacy for children, they should also try to help the many kids in the foster care system. According to the Children's Bureau, “More than 20,000 young adults were released from the foster care system after the were emancipated” (AFCARS, Report #23). When children are born into situations created by lack of resources and choice, most likely the parents will be unprepared to assume the responsibilities of parenthood. Because many parents are emotionally or financially unprepared, many mothers and fathers neglect their children. In 2015, according to the website Children’s Rights, “1,670 children died from being abused and or neglected” (“Child abuse and neglect”). Children can also be neglected because of a parent's drug addiction, so pro-lifers could help children by supporting parents who need help breaking addictions that adversely affect themselves and their
