Imagine not being able to marry the person you love; this is the reality of gay marriage. “The history of marriage has changed over time, but generally involved the establishment of family units to produce children. Kingdoms used marriage to forge alliances, acquire land, and produce legitimate heirs. By the 16th century, the church decreed that weddings were performed in public, by a priest, and before witnesses.‘Traditional Marriage’ has evolved since then and the church is currently viewing marriage as between a man and a woman.” Legalizing gay marriage has been debated for a long time and there are still many people who discriminate same-sex couples. One of these reasons is from the website ProCon.org, “Gay marriage is contrary to the word of God and is incompatible with the beliefs, sacred texts, and traditions of many religious groups.” Alex King counters with, “One of the major reasons that gay marriage is currently illegal is due to the religious interpretation that ‘homosexual are sinners.’ Such a religious perspective should have no place in federal, legal matters in the US. We live a secular society that maintains secular views. The Ten Commandments do not define our legal system.” Therefore, this argument is not accurate and is one of the unfair reasons same-sex marriage is neglected.
Another reason a lot of people would use against allowing same-sex marriage would be “Children need both a mother and a father.” Stanley Kurtz would disagree, “The idea of marriage is outdated, parents lost the sense that marriage was about being a parent.” Conferring to ProCon.org, “ A June 2014 peer-reviewed University of Melbourne study showed that children raised by same-sex parents score about six percent higher than the general population on measures of general health and family cohesion.” Nevertheless, this negative statement was incorrect as well and should not remain a con on gay
