How would a homosexual couple have a stronger union than a heterosexual couple exactly? Andrew Sullivan argues that “same-sex unions often incorporate the virtues of friendship more effectively than traditional marriages, the openness of the contract makes it more likely to survive than many heterosexual bonds” (Sullivan 300). Sullivan believes that gay couples tend to understand each other more than a typical heterosexual marriage. Same-sex couples also have a lower divorce rate than heterosexual couples. In a study done by UCLA in 2011, “rate at which legally recognized same-sex couples (in marriages or civil unions, etc.) end their relationships is 1.1% on average, while 2% of married different-sex couples divorce annually” (ProCon 12). An 1859 California Supreme Court ruling said that “the first purpose of matrimony, by the laws of nature and society, is procreation” (ProCon 2). That ruling is against gay marriage for the reason that homosexuals cannot produce offspring. What about heterosexual couples that can’t reproduce because of a medical condition or other issue?
