Pro Dress Codes In Schools

In the United States, over half of the schools (private and public) have some kind of dress code set in place. Many people think that dress code is unnecessary and many are pro-dress code. I have found that the standard dress code has (for the most part) been interpreted negatively. Dress codes are set in place to prevent distractions from one student to another and to prevent students from wearing inappropriate clothing that puts off bad images about themselves.

Although most students should take it upon themselves to dress accordingly, many do not and that is why dress code has become such a hot topic. The basic dress code of most public schools (for girls) is closed toed shoes, pants/shorts no shorter than knee length, no spaghetti straps, halter tops, tube tops, low cut, or crop tops. Hair color must not be distracting and no make up that is “unnecessarily heavy”. Basically stripping away every form of expressing ourselves, which they oh so strive to make a comfortable idea.

But i do see where girls appearance is monitored a great bit more than boys appearance. I think that is because girls have more of a range in types of clothing and school systems just don't know how to go about it. A High School took a survey and recorded 118 girls and 111 boys who participated in the survey, 64 percent of girls claimed that they had been written up for violating the dress code, but only 12 percent of boys were written up. The survey showed that boys were given 40 dress code write up slips, mainly because of displaying gang-related or explicit messages. Meanwhile, girls reported 178 write up slips, and 153 of them were because of shorts

If a girl violates dress code they are sent home to change, but if a boy violates dress code they would be expelled from school. “Curvy girls are exclusively singled out typically told their outfits are to distracting to others students. ”(Orenstein page 2) By 1974 there were over 150 court cases about young mens hairdos. “The research is pretty clear that it is never appropriate to shame any students, or to make them feel degrading or diminished.” If this keeps up students would have more anxiety attacks, increase in depression and be more aggressive towards others.…

In the Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines, the Tinkers were suing because they believed that their school violated their first amendment right to freedom of speech. This case was decided in 1969 under the Warren Court with a 7-2 decision. Three of the Tinker children and one of their friends wore black armbands to school to protest the Vietnam War. Just before the children did this, the school made a rule against protesting the Vietnam War. When the children went to school with the black armbands on, they were suspended.…

Dress codes standards send home students every day, all over the country, for being too revealing. Most are girls, and on occasions, boys that struggle with the standards, therefore they should be lowered. It’s taking away from your class time, limits self-expression, and the rules can sometimes not be correctly administered are all problems caused by dress codes standards. The dress code can take away from class time because everyone is more concerned with how we are dressed, rather than worrying about if we’ll do good on our next math test, or studying for the history final. During class, teachers can stop their lesson to tell one of their students that they are violating dress codes, therefore taking time away from class and from other students learning for something that is not relevant outside of school.…

At their core, they establish a baseline to uphold in terms of modesty for the facility. In more common terms, the goal of dress codes is to create a distraction-free learning zone. According to the student handbook, students are expected to “dress in appropriate attire which does not distract or offend others” (Source G). Gregg Ingersoll, the superintendent of Anglophone East School District, states that most dress codes are designed to try to keep the focus on the learning instead of the parts of a body that may or may not be exposed (“"School dress codes 'demeaning'”). The underlying reason for such an environment, as deemed by many schools, is the intent to protect girls from the biological impulses of their male peers.…

Boys say that they get distracted because of what girls wear, however they show lack of respect to girls. Most female students follow the dress code but males still find ways to get turned on by what they are wearing. According to the article Do school dress codes end up body-shaming girls, “Pearlman said her daughter, now 13, had been told in the fall by a teacher that she couldn’t wear yoga pants because the boys would get turned on and then be embarrassed” (Wallace). Schools judge girls for their bodies and are being sexist towards females by blaming them for not being able to control what a boy thinks about her body. A dress code just calls girls out on what they are wearing and causes them to become self-conscious about her body and feel as though she does not belong.…

Dress Code Controversy By: Sophie Li The current dress code is a topic of controversy among many parents, students, and the social media. It is an ideology that sends out patriarchal-based messages to young girls and boys that contradict the gender-equality based teachings that educators are to provide. The dress code supports rape culture stigma by protecting those who inflict the sexual violence and blaming the victims for tempting them.…

Dress codes are nothing new to our society. Many times clothing guidelines are set up in the workplace, and more commonly in today’s schools. Dress codes are often implemented into school systems to “prepare kids for the real world” but some school systems believe that certain articles’ of girls attire should be prohibited because they “distract” boys. Are these strict guidelines fair and appropriate for both young men and women? Most dress codes restrict wearing skirts and dresses that are “too short”, low cut shirts, yoga pants or leggings, all of which are worn by young ladies.…

Girls seem to be the only ones suffering from the strict school dress codes. Being a girl I think it is unethical to make a dress code given by such a society that it is harmful to girls, bullied for being different, and teaching young boys that girls bodies are sexualized and dangerous. The dress code is harmful to young high school girls because it teaches them that they have to cover up in order for guys to leave them alone. Laura says in her article How School Dress Codes Shame Girls and Perpetuate Rape Culture, “It prepares them for college life, where as many as one in five women is sexually assaulted but society will blame and question and silence them, while perpetrators are rarely disciplined (Bates).” This sends a harmful message to those girls who are the victims.…

We all know that group of girls who show up to school with their breast popping out of their shirts, butts hanging out of their shorts, and belly shirts that show way too much skin. Obviously, dressing like this to school is in no way appropriate, and should be addressed. Another argument of why the dress code should be enforced is the fact that school is a learning environment and that we should be teaching kids how to dress for the future. By doing this, you are helping young adults understand that wearing a crop top or (for boys) wearing saggy pants to an interview definitely won’t get you a job. Others may say that enforcing the dress code, like providing school uniforms, will help families that are in poverty and will decrease bullying when it comes to making fun of someone’s…

Dress codes teach girls that their bodies are sexual and that they are distracting to boys. By constantly pushing the rules about covering the shoulders or making sure your shorts are at the knee, makes it so that anything shorter or more revealing is too sexy. Dress codes make the problem worse, because the more taboo something is, the more it intrigues students and teens to look or be “distracted”. The dress code tells girls that their bodies are provocative and they are forced to cover up because if they don't then they will get harassed, because that's what they think will make a difference. The dress code teaches girls that their bodies are sexual and that boys cannot handle themselves, just because a girl's shoulder is showing.…

Dress code is a subject that students feel should be less strict. Certain ideas and concepts pertaining to school dress code can be more lenient while still being effective. There are many unnecessary rules that could easily be fixed instead of being so forbidding. For example, the sexism and gender bias in the code is derogatory towards female students. However, it is agreed that we should have a dress code of some sort rather than eliminating it all together.…
