Pro-Choice: An Argument In Favor Of Abortion

Every 107 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. An average of 32,101 pregnancies result from this each year. Believe it or not, there’s a way to save the lives of all 32,101 women: abortion. As stated by Hillary Clinton, “We’re always going to argue about abortion. It’s a hard choice, and that’s why I’m pro-choice, because I want people to make their own choices” (Clinton). These days, the word “abortion” stirs up so much controversy. It seems like everyone knows exactly where they stand in the matter: they’re either strongly pro-choice, or strongly pro-life. Whether they are influenced by religion, personal matters, or family morals, many struggle to see that there are two sides to abortion. In order to understand where proponents of pro-choice are coming from, people need to see that abortion isn’t just terminating the life of an unwanted, unborn baby. More often than not, abortion is the result of pregnancy due to rape, or the inability to support a child for any variety of reasons. Although many see it as the termination of a life, abortion needs to be an option to save the lives of women who are not able to support a child. Whether it’s due to financial instability, the quality of life of the potential child, or rape resulting in pregnancy, women need to be able to make the choice to save their own lives. Those who are against abortion may feel they are “saving” the life of the unborn child, but many do not realize they are impairing, or even ruining, the life of the pregnant woman. It is the legal right of every woman to decide what is best in her life, her family, and her situation; America needs to realize that it must remain this
