Are Professional Athletes Overpaid For, decades people have argued whether professional athletes get overpaid. Many believe that professional athletes are being overpaid; the belief is that they are getting too much money for what they are doing. However, others argue that athletes work their entire life to become what they are and make sacrifices to do so. While, it is true that professional athletes do work very hard to achieve their goals, ultimately these individuals make too much money for what they do. Though, many people believe athletes earn the money they get, facts indicate that these players should not receive the salaries they get.
One reason why athletes are overpaid is that they do not help society and get paid more than any other professions do. Athletes are there for entertainment, they have no benefits in the world for us. The army, they go to Iraq and fight against other countries to keep us safe. Athletes compete against other teams for the fun of it. Players that sit on the bench get paid millions but only play if someone gets hurt or when they are winning or losing by a significant amount. The coaches have to hire a large amount of players to create a team; they get the best out on the field, and the second best on the bench. In the article, “No Sympathy For Pro Athletes,” the author discusses the ridiculous sums of money that athletes make. “If I asked you to play one baseball game and then handed you $200,000, you would make almost as much as Alex Rodriguez does every game.” Even the players that don’t play a lot get paid the minimum, which is a six-figure salary.
