By definition, animal testing is any scientific experiment in which a live animal undergoes testing for human products in a lab. Since 384 B.C, animals such as mice, have been used for testing. In more recent years, scientists have used these animals to test the safety of human products. There are many great benefits to this scientific practice. High end makeup brands, such as: Urban Decay, MAC, and NARS, ensure the safety of their products by testing on animals. Furthermore, mice are used in labs due to their small life span of 2-3 years and chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with humans. Also, major scientific advancements in the cure for breast cancer and cystic fibrosis have been made through animal testing. Animal testing is the most accurate way to test human products. Many companies Americans use on a daily basis test their products on animals. By testing on animals, companies can modify products to ensure their quality and safety. Before mosquito repellent is sold, scientist study the reaction of the mice from the repellent. If the mice react badly, the company modifies the flaw to make sure it is safe for human use. Mosquito repellent prevents the contraction of …show more content…
Since they have such a short life span, scientists are able to study their products at different stages in their life. For example, baby soap could be tested on a mice's first day of life. Furthermore, acne cream could be tested when a mice is at year 1 in its life cycle, which would be considered its teenage years. Last, a cure for Alzheimer's could be tested at around 2-3 years in a mice's life cycle. Another reason animals are accurate to test on is because they are similar to humans in monumental ways. Such as, mice have all the sam organs that humans have. Also, they are 98% genetically similar to humans and they have the same exact amount of organs that humans

Oliveira 1 Animals should not be used for scientific or commercial testing because animal testing is cruel and inhumane, alternate testing methods are available, and because humans and animals are every different from each other making animals very poor test subjects. Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 BC (Animal Testing Pro & Con). Scientist use animals for many different purposes. Animals are used to test the effectiveness and safety of new drugs before those drugs are given to people to treat illness and disease. Animals can also be used as test subjects for products like lipstick, eyeshadow, contact lens solution, and shampoo (Hayhurst, 26).…

Although humans and animals have several similarities, one being a living organism, their anatomic, metabolic, and cellular makeup differ. For instance dogs have a digestive tract length of 60 cm, whereas he humans have a digestive tract length of 150cm(). Also, animals vital signs are different from that of a human: body temperature, blood pressure, and pulse. Therefore, animal testing does not guarantee accurate results. A lot of experiments are flawed, resulting in unsafe and inaccurate findings.…

Animal testing is cruel and inhumane. These animals are subjected to forced feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, infliction of burns and wounds to study the healing process and effects and remedies. Among the cruelest experiments is the Draize eye test which evaluates irritation by shampoos and other products to the eyes. During this experiment rabbits are restrained and their eyelids are held open by clips for multiple days which leads to the death of 50% of rabbits used (Scientific American, "Do Cosmetic Companies Still Test on Live Animals?," scientificamerican.com). We also are very different from animals; having different metabolic, anatomical, and cellular differences.…

Animal testing is no longer effective in today’s society. Testing has no purpose, it has been said many a time that it is useless and unnecessary. There is a higher chance of flipping a coin and being accurate in a test than actually doing the research and testing on animals. To see if a new product is safe it goes through a whole process where animals are being mistreated for the benefits of humans. Animals in experiments today are bred for the sole purpose of the particular experiment, so once the experiment ends, the animals have no value, and end up getting euthanized, because they are useless to scientists.…
