Privileges Of Whiteness

The term Whiteness is defined as a defined set of experiences or certain characteristics or personality traits that are attached to the white race and skin colour as a whole. In places with a majority or large amount of white people this term whiteness would just be a noun for the norm or native. This in comparison to other minority groups such as Black, Asian, and Hispanic would be considered the minorities. As talked about in many threads and books I have looked into online it seems that this term whiteness comes down to the skin itself more than how people act or talk. With whiteness, some believe there are privileges that come along with this territory that date back hundreds of years ago to even modern day. The term whiteness to me refers …show more content…
Whiteness is just other words for being the majority of a certain race and with that comes along with privileges and the idea of being accepted. You can try to act “more white” but the true fact is whiteness is something that you inherited and that is if you like it or not. There is no class structure where you can climb through in order to achieve the label known as whiteness and that is why it is such a broad but confusing topic. In my opinion when you here the term whiteness you think of a white collar European decent male who makes a six figure salary. But when you dig down into the root of it that is not really the case. There are plenty of white people who are not well off and educated but are still categorized as being part of what we know as whiteness. The term whiteness is almost directly linked to the word privileged. I think this is because it roots back not to the modern day world of how we are privilege but so much as the later periods when slavery was around a the immigration of many groups started to occur in America. When white people started to migrate to America they had first dibs on land, voted on how this …show more content…
I think that white people today are so afraid of being labelled a racist and being looked at as more privileged than the minority races. In Today’s day and age white people at the moment are being looked at very carefully and critically. For example many white cops at the moment are being targeted by some of the black community for some instances that have occurred within the last five years that have to do with police brutality. Although many people do not realise that there is black on Black Death involving the police than white on black deaths or vice versa. The media in my opinion does not help unite whites with minorities but instead they divide them, this all for media attention and revenue. Although some may not face this issue there is some reverse discrimination that goes on because of the past involving how the whites treated the minorities in the past. One I can think of that I have experienced first-hand has to do with the NYPD exams. If you are a minority are take the exam you are granted extra points then if you were to be white. This sets you at a higher tier which speeds up the process of you getting the job and allows a greater odd for you to be called then the white guy who may have scored higher then you or the same. This is where I see an issue I feel that your race should not

White privilege is an inherent advantage, that is unearned and unacknowledged, yet practiced by whites regularly. White people typically earn more money and have more assets than other races. Fortunate individuals continue to fail to realize there is still inequality. They usually rise well above the poverty line, and live relatively economically sound lives. This is true for Brock Turner, a white male former swimmer and student at Stanford University.…

Whiteness studies are important in her analysis of how the racial regime functions. Whiteness is the dominant status that shapes the racial order and understanding in American society (pg. 62). Whiteness is what all other races are measured by, but it is often not recognized by the dominant group. This goes along with what we read from Peggy McIntosh (1998). Myers actually quotes from the reading White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack which we read in week 8.…

We live in a society defined by race. Without other races, the idea of Whiteness would not exist. Therefore, it is extremely important to name White as a racial category. By stating that “White Canadians are just Canadians” you are making an assumption that all Canadians are White; thus, diminishing White as a race. Consequently, making White the norm and an unearned privilege (McIntosh 76).…

In the article, What my Bike Has Taught Me About White Privilege, the author explains how them changing their primary transportation method from a car to a bike has taught them a lesson about being privileged in America. Personally, I agree with everything that the author states and mentions within the article. A few main points I would like to highlight are privilege in general, the explanation of white privilege, and I would like to include my own experience viewing white privilege. Like the article mentions, the topic of white privilege is hard for a lot of people to talk about, and it is guaranteed to get some people into a heated argument.…

What exactly is white privilege, one might say? White privilege is knowing that one has unearned privilege but choose to ignore the meaning of it. " White Privilege Shapes the U.S" by Robert Jensen, first appeared in the Baltimore Sun on July 19, 1998. In this editorial, Jensen speaks about his personal experience on white privilege and how being white can give them more unearned privilege than those of other races. Furthermore, Jensen states that unearned white privilege was given rather than by working hard for it, but faces the choice on how they use it, and to admit they have benefitted from it.…

As stated in Sue and Sue (2012), “ What is more relevant is that Whiteness is associated with unearned privilege – advantages conferred on White American but not on person of color.” I agree with what Sue and Sue stated. It has been my experience; some White Euro-Americans tend to deny that there is a thing as white privilege. If there is White privilege, they have not experienced it. I am going to coin it the David C. mentality.…

I believe the term “End of white America” means the ending of white’s believing and acting their more superior than other races. I believe the term white America comes from the way whites are being able to do things and get away with things without being enforced as in the same way as in minorities. As in example if any minority will kill a innocent victim they would be arrested and sentence to prison, while any white individual can go to a school, daycare, movie’s, etc., and shoot the building up with helpless innocent victims, they will still be seen as an innocent person or they while be seen as a mental child with childhood issues and not be sentenced to prison. Another thing that shows we are in white America is the fact that all you see on television is white television shows or white family’s with one diverse monitory character on the show as the sidekick and if there is no minority character they add them on as extra for a few second. With this going on this causes segregation with other shows of just minorities that tries to…

In Tim Wise’s book “White Like Me Reflections on Race from a Privileged son” (2011), Wise tackles the controversial topic of white privilege and how racial identity and whiteness here in America shape the overall lives of white Americans and adversely affect people of color. He entwines stories from his own life experiences from birth to present to make it both an easy read and relatable. Wise explains exactly what white privilege means and how this privilege is systematically embedded into American society and because of this, racism and racial disparities are rampant. He writes this book, not for those people of color, as they already know and understand the effects that whiteness (or lack thereof) has on their lives; but he writes for his…

As I sat in philosophy class, I listened to the discussion about “The Color of Fear” (documentary). Many people sat quiet in efforts to keep arguments and insults at bay. However, one female stated something that made my thoughts initiate. She loudly and proudly stated, “I’m a white female, as white as they come, and I do not have white privilege”. She finished her statement with a further explanation, “I had a rough life growing up and I never got everything I wanted; therefore, I’m sure I was not privileged by my race”.…

People often think of race as something that is ethnic and exotic, something that only people of color possess. However, whiteness is just as much of a race as any other, yet we continue to ignore the fact that being white is conceptually the same as being black, Hispanic, Muslim, or what have you. This idea is called white privilege and it is based on the social construct that gives white people an advantage, socially, over all other races. Whiteness is constructed in such a way that it is often seen as a default and the norm and is subsequently, basically invisible. Yet, if we can’t see it, then how do we know how whiteness exists as a race or how operates and affects people?…

    White Hegemony In America

All throughout time, people have been divided due to their differences. People who see others that are different from them will often immediately decide that they are “weird” and put those people lower than themselves. According to Linda Holtzman and Leon Sharpe in their passage, “Theories and Constructs of Race,” Race is just a social construct made by humans to exclude people based on what they look like, where they are from, their culture, etc. If scientists were to look at someone’s deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) compared to another person with, say, different colored skin, they would notice that there is not much of a difference between the two people. Therefore, as Holtzman and Sharpe say, “race is constructed socially, culturally, politically,…

White privilege has to do with getting away with certain actions or being accommodated to for being white. It does not mean that all white people grew up in mansions while surrounded by gold bars. The reverse discrimination claims made by Caucasians are basically rude comments or affirmative action doing what it is supposed to do. It is in no way oppression or racism. In a different article one man stated that “‘whites have never really felt terribly secure in their majority status,’ he says.…
