Private Violin Lessons Learned

When I was a freshman, I decided to take private violin lessons and join my teacher’s private orchestra group to further my skills. Although, this was where I faced my biggest struggle: playing in front of others. During the rehearsal, the conductor would ask us to individually play a specific section in the music to test if we practiced or not. When she announced we were going to play one by one, I would get anxious and fidget. During my turn, I would play quietly and out of tune. Despite this struggle, my teacher would recognize how much effort I contributed during the rehearsals and allowed me to borrow one of their high-end violins imported from Italy.
Because I had a higher quality violin that produced a greater sound than my previous

As a musician, nothing terrifies you more than a botched performance. We spend weeks or months or sometimes even years working on a piece, only to get on stage and make a complete fool of ourselves. It is not that we lack the talent or passion for doing the music justice, but that simple, unmanageable factors make a huge impact when we have been stuck in the habit of using our typical environment to prepare for a performance. The smallest things can make the biggest difference- whether it be a different room, a different audience, or maybe even a different instrument altogether (which is very common as a percussionist, seeing as most of our instruments are much too large to transport everywhere we go). Nevertheless, an awful performance is…

The author Robert W. Berger wrote the article “The Devil, the Violin, and Paganini: The Myth of the Violin as Satan’s Instrument” to express his explanation of why the Violin is interpreted as the Demonic instrument in biblical text. In parts throughout the article, Berger refers to Mythical Legends across Eastern Europe as Devil Violinists and how certain violinists sold their souls to the Devil. Niccolo Paganini was a 17th century violinist who—according to myth—sold his sold to the Devil to become the greatest violinist; thus, Berger uses this myth to explain reason why the Devil is so associated with the Violin. Next, author Beth Pei-Fen Chen illustrates throughout her article “Mozart’s Slurs and Bowing Guidance: Violin Concertos in…

Passing the Torch lessons has made Jayrhien improve as a musician by learning the fundamentals of playing the violin. During our lessons together, Jayrhien learned how to properly hold the bow and violin. Learning this skill took harder than I expected due to the amount of correction we had to do and the time it took to fix it, but eventually, Jayrhien was able to fix her wrist and bow hold. We then moved to learning the positions of the finger depending if the note was natural, flat, or sharp. This was one of the hardest things Jayrhien did since she was still a beginner and her finger has yet to learn where to go, she would often forget to keep playing F natural as her fingers go back to play F sharp and vice versa.…

When the group is performing I not only perform, but I'm the assistant director and direct my companions to make sure we stay together and are aware of what we are doing. As assistant director of our group when members don’t know something they ask me, and I always have an answer or else I find out and make sure everyone knows. For instance, whenever we are performing I will suggest a song and count it of to let us know we are starting, then I will announce if there is a chorus or instrumental part to let them know when to play, lastly I will let them know when the ending is near to have them ready to end.…

That is, except the Harry Potter piece. Unfortunately, I am still getting used to my timetable and need ample time to continue composing, reading philosophical tomes and building my solo repertoire. Also, to be sovereign over my time, I am unable to maintain regular rehearsal schedules.…

When it was announced on the first day of Blue Lake International, a four-week music camp, that I had gotten the position of first flute, my heart swelled with pride. However, the position was soon taken by a counselor, Tracey whom I thought would merely assist with rehearsals. Furthermore, Tracey began taking major flute solos from the students because she believed they lacked the skill to perform them. Her method of teaching mainly employed grabbing instruments, shouting, and glaring. Afraid that she would ruin my experience, I quickly picked up on what she disliked and started acting much friendlier.…

When I was preparing myself for my RCM Level 10 Violin Examination, I had agreed to do a solo performance of one of my pieces for an annual exhibition which my music academy organized. While it wasn't a competition, there would be an audience of hundreds of people - the students, the parents, teachers, and any friends they might invite. I had previously partaken in this yearly event but always as part of a group, never a performance of my own. This was foreign and completely daunting to me. I had taken this on to familiarize myself with one of my Level 10 repertoire so it was expected that I memorize my music score as well.…

I decided months ago that I was going to put my best work into practicing for my final orchestral seat assignment. With seats based on the quality of a single audition, I knew that I’d have to put in the hours to get to the front row. I got the music the first week of school and immediately wrote in the notes of the tenor clef: contrasting my native bass clef in its high register, I didn’t want to mess it up. I worked out fingerings and string-crossing and rhythms, but never picked up my cello at home. I only ever worked out the music in class, and I wasn’t the only one.…

Consequences I felt like throwing my violin at the wall. I had spent hours and hours getting my scales in tune, and I was still putting my fingers on the wrong places on the fingerboard. Rubbing my eyes, I put the violin down in its case and looked outside the window. It was pitch black outside, so that meant that it was very late.…

The church sanctuary was dimmed except for the bright light shining above the grand piano on the stage. The pews were filled with parents, friends, and of course, the performers. Once a year, I would have to step on that stage, sit on the piano bench, and play a memorized piece. This is what many musicians fear: a music performance. Months before that fateful spring day, my teacher and I decided on a beautiful piece by Frederick Chopin.…

It is clear what many students would say if you were to join- why would someone with no musical experience feel inclined to join an organization made for that sole purpose? You have never picked up a violin or cello in your life, so why would you start now? Although these accusations are true, they are just a few of the many reasons why you would be a perfect fit in the orchestra family. Your willingness to tackle a challenge has been a key trait throughout your life, and there is no better way to exercise this than to surround yourself with peers that strive to do the same. Not only are you hard-working, but your cheerful attitude and luminous smile are nothing less than what every orchestra member should try to model themselves after.…

Do I really want to do the violin as a career? Do I love the violin so much that I want to spend the rest of my life with it? These questions pondered in my mind as I looked out the window in my dad's car on the way to the Heifetz Summer Music Institute. Since I am 15 yrs old and going to college soon (time flies fast), I realized I really needed to think about what I might want to do as an adult. So during the summer, I went to Heifetz to spend time with other great string musicians and teachers, practice a lot of violin, and really understand what path I should take.…
